The exhibition
Under the title “Staging Identity” , the Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt explores questions around the theme of identity against the background of artistic role play in photography and film.
From 24 October 2020 to 28 March 2021, the Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt will show an exhibition in which photography and film are used as a stage for artists’ questioning of identities. In the exploration of the theme of identity, its construction, its transformation, and its fiction, the camera functions as a mirror for stagings of the self – or of the Other.
Masquerade, the Body, and Performative Play as an artistic practice is the joint starting point of the works shown. The exhibition opens a panorama of dealings with the staged self between playful, ironic, and political views of the theme identity from the end of the 1970s to the present day. “Staging Identity” presents works by Candice Breitz, Elsa & Johanna, Samuel Fosso, Rodney Graham, Pipilotti Rist, Cindy Sherman, and others.
The exhibition is part of the 11th Darmstadt Photography Days (www.dtdf.de) of 2020.
